In his Latest Post Google's Matt Cutts clearly said about the issue whether your site Ranking hit an Algorithmic Penalty.

The worries of the webmasters and the SEO world are getting tougher everyday and they can't understand what are going to their websites or Businesses. All this issues are creeping day by day and now Google's Web Spam Head Matt Cutts came out with a video where he described all the things.

Matt Cutts wants to say if your site is hit by a Google algorithm such as Panda or Penguin, first see your analytics, webmaster-tools and find any major difference in traffic from Google on that specific day. In his video he describes three reasons why a ranking drop might occur:

1. If a site get Manual Action.

2. Crawling Error

3. Algorithmic Penalty.

Manual Actions and Crawling Errors are well show in goggle webmaster-tools as a notification so it is clear. And for the Algorithmic penalties, they are algorithms for ranking which is based on general content and algorithms. However there is a good news, Cutts said if the webmasters work on penalty and poor content they might recover their site's rankings. Since rankings are algorithmic, so the webmasters should be patient and look out what other high ranking sites are doing.
